Construction companies spent more money in December than they had the month before, marking it the fifth consecutive month for that trend. It wasn’t a great year for the construction industry, but the news from the U.S. Department of Commerce that spending has risen for five straight months ends 2011 on a good note and carries momentum into the new year.

Spending on construction projects rose 1.5 percent in December after a revised 0.4 percent gain in November, the Commerce Department said Wednesday. That pushed spending to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $816.4 billion, the highest level in 20 months.

The increase in construction spending may be an indication that the housing market is experiencing its own recovery and that homebuilders are feeling more confident. A Department of Commerce report has also shown that single-family home construction increased in October, November and December of last year and that home sales also showed a slight increase.

Economist hope the Commerce report is an indication that the economy is experiencing a recovery and as construction rises it can only be good news for the commercial trucking industry. Even before the construction sector began to grow last year, the commercial trucking industry had already been experiencing strong growth. More manufacturers are choosing to sell products domestically, rather than overseas, which means there is more business for America’s trucks. However, the construction industry also plays an important part in the trucking sector as commercial trucks play a big part in delivering construction materials and other products used inside a newly built home.

When a family buys a new home they often buy new stuff to go in it. From dishwashers to couches, TVs to beds, all these products are shipped primarily on trucks. The more homes that are sold, the more products trucks will ship.
